DESCRIPTION: EPW - John Archambo, London, gold repoussé verge fusee quarter-hour repeater, 47mm, 18-22K gold OF pair cases pierced for sound transmission, outer with classical repoussé scene to rear depicting four figures at a table, outer containing casepaper for German watchmaker A. Winkel, inner with foliate scrolling around perimeter, grotesque mask at 6 and musical instruments to rear, removal of bell reveals London hallmarks for 1740, casemaker's marking in cameo is not fully distinct with marks and wear, white enamel dial, KWKS, verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock with grotesque mask at its neck, signed gilt locking dust-cap, s#1800 with matching serial number to dust-cap. Gross weight of assembled watch 73.2 dwt (113.9 g).
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good repeat function with repeat tone that is inconsistent being sometimes fairly muffled but at other times sounding through clearly and resonantly and suggesting possible need for hammer adjustment, under dial at 7 is an empty recess that was likely originally a slide for dumb repeat function that is no longer present, overhaul recommended for repeat tone and possible dumb repeat function, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright gilt surfaces with some typical fine scratches; dial with glaze scratches to lower portion from slipped attempted openings, very small edge flake adjacent aperture for opening; outer case shows light wear, few small mild nicks, excellent engraving detail, button latch with good function though with denting to button; inner case shows light wear, some scratches and mild dings, good engraving detail with mild reduction; bow pivots freely; good domed glass bull's-eye crystal.
